Suffering From A Sports Injury?

© Depositphotos.com/[Wavebreakmedia]Sports injuries come in all shapes and sizes; from strains and sprains to fractures and shin splints.   Often, these types of injuries can be prevented with conditioning, use of safety equipment, and proper warm up and cool down periods.  But every athlete will likely face a sports injury at some point or time.

How To Spot Common Sports Injuries

Common areas for injury include ankles, knees, elbows, shoulders, neck and spine.  Although the cause may vary, the most obvious indication of an injury is pain.

Strains and sprains are very common sports injuries that affect the tendons, muscles and ligaments of the body.  Twisting or over-extension of joints will often lead to tears in tendons or muscles (strains) or ligaments (sprains).  Typically, pain will be felt at the site of the injured tendon or ligament, becoming more severe with movement.  Joint swelling and bruising can sometimes be noticed with sprains.

Stress fractures, or fatigue fractures, can occur from an abnormal amount of stress on a bone.  Conditional training may help to reduce the chance of a stress fracture.  Pain, tenderness, swelling and even abnormality in the way the affected area looks can be an indication of an injury.  X-rays will help for certain diagnosis.  A cast or even surgery may be needed depending on the severity of the injury.

Tendinitis is another injury that many active people experience.  Over training, overuse or repetitive use of joints can often lead to this type of injury and pain.  Some common tendinitis injuries are tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, and rotator cuff injuries (shoulders). Symptoms range from pain, tenderness and swelling, to stiffness in the joint area.

Sports Injury Treatment Options

After diagnosing a sports injury, and assuming that no surgery is needed, treatment of sports is relatively standard.  Your chiropractor may suggest:

Rest: Typically the amount of rest needed depends on the severity of the injury.  Your chiropractor will advise the right amount of rest required to avoid further injury and speed recovery.

Elevation: Elevating the injured area can help to reducing swelling.

Ice/Heat: Hot or cold compresses can help to reduce pain and inflammation while promoting healing.

Compression:  Some injuries may benefit from compression of the injured area to reduce swelling.  Again, this is something your chiropractor can advise on.

Joint Manipulation: Your chiropractor will determine if joint manipulation could be helpful in helping to reduce pain and aid in recovery time.

Using over-the-counter medications such as Ibuprofin or Naproxin (Advil/Motrin/Aleve) for more than 3-5 days is not recommended without consulting a doctor.

if you’ve been injured or are suffering from pain after participating in a sporting event or exercise, it is best to consult your chiropractor before attempting self-treatment.
